QualiType Software FontHandler and Font Sentry "Special Edition" Version for Windows 3.1 * Release Notes * Welcome to the QualiType "SE" versions of FontHandler and Font Sentry! This package contains software for Microsoft Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.1 ONLY. If you are running Windows 95 please download our Win95-specific SE version package (filename QTSE95.EXE) from our forum library on CompuServe at GO QTYPE. If you do not have access to CompuServe, look for the QTSE95.EXE file wherever you found this QTSE31.EXE version file, or send an email message to 74777.3535@compuserve.com for a list of other sites where you can download our files. This document contains general information on how to set up and use this software as well as late-breaking news that did not make it into the online Help. Please take the time to review this entire file. CONTENTS Of This ReadMe File: ----------------------------- A. Getting Started B. FontHandler SE Additional News and Information 1. Getting Started =============================================================== To get started with this software, we recommend following the steps below. 1. If you have not already, uncompress and copy the software to your computer's hard disk by running the QTSE31.EXE program file. This is a self-extracting Windows archive that contains all necessary files for this program. No "installer" program or procedure is necessary other than unpacking the archive to your hard disk. However, if you want to you may optionally run the INSTALL.EXE program to create a Program Manager group and icons for the software. 2. Be sure to review the entire contents of this README file. 3. For an interactive tour of this software, use the QualiType online Help "Visual Help" sub-system. This is a "point and click" guide to the main features and functions of our programs. By browsing the Visual Help screens, you can learn about the programs without actually running them. (Any Windows *.HLP file may be opened directly by running the WINHELP.EXE program in your \WINDOWS directory). 4. For specific information about using FontHandler, see the main Help topics "What Is QualiType FontHandler" and "Font Management Essentials". For information on the Font Sentry system see "Font Sentry Overview" and "Quick Introduction Experiment" in the Font Sentry Help file. 5. Finally, if you have not already set up a font-storage system on your computer, you may want to do so before beginning to work with FontHandler. See the FontHandler Help topic on "Setting Up Your Font System" for details. IMPORTANT: In reviewing the "Setting Up" information, please bear in mind the limitations on font-directory selection in FontHandler SE outlined below. The online Help information was written to reflect the full-version FontHandler product. B. FontHandler SE Additional News and Information =============================================================== 1. SE Version Limitations ========================= FontHandler SE is restricted in certain features as compared to our full-version FontHandler 2.0 product. The program's operation for installing and uninstalling TrueType and ATM fonts is fully enabled, and you can preview and print samples of fonts as well. The SE limitations are primarily in the number of font groups that you can create and in the font directories that the program can access. Other limitations in various font-management-related features like renaming fonts and searching for fonts are not available as well. However, the program's basic operation and interface design remains unaffected by these limitations, and you should be able to fairly assess its usefulness and operation by running this SE version. Anyone who is SERIOUS about fonts, however, will definitely want to upgrade to our full-version program! See the online Help file for ordering details and a special discount offer. 2. Changing the HOME directory ============================== By default, the FontHandler HOME directory is the location where the program is installed. This directory is where the FontHandler Setup Module will look for font files at startup, but you will normally not have any font files stored here. Thus at first, the program may not show any fonts in the "UnInstalled" listbox. This is normal. In the full-version FontHandler program, you can change the default HOME directory in the Setup Options dialog box. However, in this SE version the "Change Directory" function is limited to ONLY the default Windows TrueType and Adobe Type Manager font directory locations. If you want to use some other directory besides (a) the program's installation directory or (b) one of the two default font-system locations, you may do so by manually editing the Setup Module's "Home directory=" command line in a plain-text editor such as the Windows NOTEPAD. You will find this command line in the FHSTSE20.INI file in your \WINDOWS directory. Note: see the additional information about this INI file below. 3. Reinstalling or Moving Program Files ======================================= Please note that only ONE INSTANCE of the FontHandler SE software is allowed to exist on your computer! Additional copies that you may install to other drives or directories will use configuration and data files from the first installed instance. However, if you need to move or reinstall the software to a new location on your hard disk, you may do so without trouble by first deleting the extra copy of the FHSTSE20.INI and/or the QTCMSE10.INI files located in your Windows directory. When the reinstalled or moved program is run the next time, it will automatically recreate these files for you. 4. Installing Over FontHandler Version 1.0 ========================================== FontHandler SE installs into a new directory structure compared to the default location for FontHandler 1.0. If you are a FontHandler version 1.0 user, you can continue to use the 1.0 version for productive work while you explore and learn about our 2.0 release with this SE version. Please note that we recommend only running ONE of each release at a time. For best results you should exit any running instance of one release before launching a copy of the other release. 5. Notes for Upgraders ====================== If you are upgrading to FontHandler 2.0 from either our 1.0 version or from any version of Ares(tm) FontMinder(tm), you may be interested in reading the FHFMNOTE.WRI file enclosed with this FontHandler SE file set. This is a Windows Write format document with a copy of the "Notes for Upgraders" section of the printed FontHandler User's Guide book. 6. Additional Files of Interest =============================== * CTL3DV2.QT This is the Microsoft "3D Controls" library file for enabling the three-dimensional look in all Windows programs. Rename this file to CTL3DV2.DLL and move it to the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory if you do not already have it on your system and want to see the 3D effects in FontHandler. * FONTHAND.DOT This is a Microsoft Word for Windows template file which may be used to integrate FontHandler SE with Word, so that a button and menu command to launch FontHandler SE appears on the Word toolbar and under the "Tools" menu. To use this file, simply copy it to your Word for Windows \STARTUP directory. The next time you start Word, the button and menu item for FontHandler will appear. To remove this feature, simply move or delete the FONTHAND.DOT file from the \STARTUP directory again. Note that if you install FontHandler SE to a disk drive or directory other than the default, you must edit the macro contained in this template file to point to the correct program location. See your Word for Windows documentation for more information on *.DOT files, editing macros, and template files in the \STARTUP directory. C. Font Sentry SE Additional News and Information =============================================================== 1. SE Version limitations ========================= QualiType Font Sentry SE has all of the features of our full version product, with one exception: it works ONLY with the Windows WRITE word processing program included with Windows. You can thus use the SE version to experiment with and learn about what Sentry is and how it works before purchasing our full-version product. The full-version Font Sentry works the same as with Write with ALL Windows programs that are fully compatible with the Windows font sub-system. 2. Program Installation Location ================================ The Font Sentry SE program files must be located in the same directory as the FontHandler SE program files. Either program may be run independently of the other, but their files must be located in the same place in order for them to be able to co-operate (for example, for the Sentry Setup dialog to be able to be launched from the FontHandler Main Window). 3. Multiple Master Fonts ======================== QualiType Font Sentry SE (and the full version 1.0) does not support Adobe's Multiple Master Type 1 font format. At this writing, we have plans to add MM support to the next version of Font Sentry, but for now you must manage Multiple Master or MM "instance" fonts manually, using either the Adobe Type Manager Control Panel or QualiType FontHandler.
